Systematic Synthetic Phonics

At The Phonics Academy, we follow a Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) approach, where children are taught sounds in a clear, structured sequence and learn how to apply them for reading and spelling.

This method focuses on mastering the “code” of reading, enabling children to confidently blend sounds to read words and segment words for spelling, building strong and lasting literacy foundations.

Classes

Small Group

1-hour

Levels: Beginner | Intermediate | Advanced

Our group phonics classes provide a structured and engaging learning environment where children learn alongside peers at similar levels.

Lessons focus on essential phonics skills such as:

  • Phonemes (sounds in words)
  • Graphemes (letters that represent sounds, e.g. sh, ai, ck)
  • Blending (putting sounds together to read words)
  • Segmenting (breaking words into sounds for spelling)
  • Decoding and encoding (reading and spelling words using sounds)
  • Tricky words and high-frequency words

Through interactive activities, children also learn important spelling patterns such as digraphs, trigraphs, split digraphs, and consonant blends.

In a supportive small group setting, children build confidence, reinforce their skills through interaction, and progress steadily towards fluent reading and stronger English foundations.

Private

1-hour

Our 1-to-1 phonics programme offers personalised instruction tailored to each child’s learning pace, strengths, and needs.

Lessons are carefully adapted to ensure each child masters key skills step by step.

Focus areas include:

  • Strengthening phoneme awareness and grapheme recognition
  • Improving blending for reading fluency
  • Developing segmenting for accurate spelling
  • Building confidence in decoding and encoding
  • Mastering tricky words and high-frequency words

Beyond reading, children are also supported in broader English development, including writing, spelling, and word recognition, helping them build a strong and confident language foundation.

With focused attention, children receive targeted support to overcome learning gaps, strengthen weaker areas, and accelerate their overall progress in English.
